Artist Statement
Focused on the ambivalent inbetween, I imagine figures as allegories of the human condition. They incarnate my search for a storyline in everything, narrating the dualism of being human in figurative paintings of shadow and light.
Being influenced by the dark fairy tales of my childhood, poems, symbolistic art and historical pictures, I places recurring figures and symbols in imagined settings to create an allegoric narrative. My work is a very personal approach to themes which are meaningful to me: feelings and relations,
ideas and experiences, dreams and memories. Revealing, yet hiding them inside their symbolic language, is my way of examining myself and life, trying to make sense of things observed and concerned of. My work is an attempt to understand the dualism I feel at times, regarding the human condition. They tend to ask: how can we be like this? How can humans be both, utterly tender, full of beauty and love, music and poetry and at the same time capable of being totally cruel towards each other, their surroundings, themselves? Discerning this question in the idea of love – or its absence, my paintings express this ambivalence in strong dark and light colours.
Artist Bio
Sandy Lang is a self taught figurative artist based in Frankfurt, Germany. She developed her work for several years before she decided to show her paintings to a public world outside of her studio. After attending group exhibitions in Berlin, Prague, Portugal and the US, her first solo show „Entourage of Light“ took place in Berlin 2016. While she prefers to work alone in her nightly studio, Sandy also worked in arty collaborations, including production design for two short films. Between 2019 and 2020 she provided six paintings for a temporary art group that worked on the myth of Marsyas, which resulted in a beautiful soiree with poetry and music shortly before the 2020 lockdown. Since then she was able to take part in several virtual exhibitions and has been featured in art magazines
and directories. Currently she is creating a large collection of figurative paintings on the topic of human attitudes towards strange encounters which is planned as a solo show for next year.
